David R. Baker

Business Reporter, San Francisco Chronicle

David R. Baker covers energy and clean tech for The San Francisco Chronicle. He joined the paper in 2000 after spending five years in Southern California reporting for the Los Angeles Times and the Daily News of Los Angeles. He has covered the clean tech industry since its early days, chronicling the success of some companies, including Tesla Motors, and the implosion of others, most notably Solyndra. He was the first reporter at any of California’s major daily papers to write about fracking within the state. And in a series of in-depth pieces last year, he explored the pros and cons of keeping California’s last nuclear plant, Diablo Canyon, open. In 2003, he visited Baghdad and Basra to write about Iraq’s reconstruction. He graduated from Amherst College and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. He lives in San Francisco with his wife.
